In "Losing Your Memo" (Star-Dot-Star, November 1990), we
described a way of loading dBASE data when a DBT memo file
is missing and presumed unrecoverable. Two readers have
since suggested an alternative method. Just create a
zero-length file with the same name as your DBF file and the
DBT extension. Although the file contains nothing, it fools
dBASE into thinking the memos are intact and therefore lets
you load your DBF file.
To create the empty file, enter the command `TYPE NUL >
FILENAME.DBT' at the DOS prompt. Be careful; if the DBT file
still exists, the command will erase it. Thanks to Jean
Heriot of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, and Tim Erikson of
Delavan, Wisconsin, for showing that you can get something
for nothing.
Postcript: This tip originally said to use the command `TYPE
> FILENAME.DBT', but this does not work under MS-DOS 5.0.
Using NUL, the "null" file, works under DOS 5 and also under
older versions of DOS.
